S.510 Food Safety Bill Has Run Aground

Senate bill 510 labeled the "food safety and modernization act" tried to add some new taxes in the bill to "raise revenue". However, only the House of Reps is able to initiate legislation that includes new taxes. This constitutional bungle by the Senate will result in what's called a "blue slip" by the House and the bill will need to be redone and then revoted on. It's unlikely the Senate will have time to do this and all the other things in it's lame duck agenda.

YEAH! OK, it's not dead ... just taking a nap. But when it wakes up, hopefully the new cast of characters in the house/senate will decide that there are better things to spend their time on.

House May Block Food Safety Bill Over Senate Error

A food safety bill that has burned up precious days of the Senate’s lame-duck session appears headed back to the chamber because Democrats violated a constitutional provision requiring that tax provisions originate in the House.

The blue slip could lead to one of two likely outcomes. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) could simply drop the issue and let the next session of Congress start from scratch, a strategy that would allow him time in the lame-duck session to tackle other last-minute priorities, such as the expiring 2001 and 2003 tax cuts, a long-term continuing resolution, an immigration bill and a repeal of the military’s ban on openly gay service members.

More Sweets… More Diabetes

We've been linking the massive increase in diabetes with increased obesity in the US. Now it's likely that we should focus more on our choices. As you can tell by this article, the researchers are trying to come up with an explanation as to why sugary drinks seem to increase diabetes with or without the presence of obesity since they've "known" that obesity is what causes type II diabetes.

I believe the truth is that sweets/sugars are chemicals to our bodies. We were never designed to be exposed to these purified sugar compounds (and refined flours for that matter) and this exposure repeatedly day after day, year after year has created diabetes AND obesity.

In 1895, the average American consumed about 3-4 lbs of refined carbs in a year and diabetes was number 100 on the disease list. Today, we consume approximately 170 lbs of sugar (and high fructose corn syrup) per year and diabetes has crept into the top 10 killers in the US. Diabetes steals people's quality of life as much as it kills. Diabetes causes blindness, permanent nerve damage, the need for amputations, and kidney damage causing people to go on dialysis.

What this study is saying is that you can no longer use your weight as a determination as to whether or not you are handling sugars/carbs well. If you are interested in living a long time, sweets and refined carbohydrates should be the first thing you get rid of.

Soda Ups Diabetes Risk With or Without Weight Gain

People who drank one or two sugar-sweetened beverages a day, like soda or vitamin water, had a 26% increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes, compared with those who barely drank any
Part of sugar-sweetened beverages' contribution to diabetes is via obesity, but there are other pathways as well
sweetened beverages have been linked to increases in serum glucose as well as rapid and dramatic fluctuations in insulin, a cascade linked to glucose intolerance, insulin resistance, beta-cell dysfunction, and inflammation.

A recent study has also suggested that fructose, the main sweetener in these drinks, may be linked to high blood pressure as well as increases in LDL and triglycerides.

Doctors HOPE Super Potency Vaccine Works

I realize this is the time of year that everyone is faced with the decision... to vaccinate against the flu or not. I really can't answer that question for you specifically. However, I do have to say, the powers that be certainly are a deceptive bunch. If you read this article in the LA Times, you will see that "scientists long have known that as the body ages, the immune system doesn't respond as vigorously to the typical vaccination." Have you shared this with the general population? And why do you suppose that is? Could it be that this group of people are having a hard time absorbing nutrients, their organs are not as strong as they used to be, their bodies are in a state of decline? Then why on earth would you go and ask the body to do more work.

The reason the elderly are more prone to infections is that their systems are depleted and tired. The answer is to support their immune systems (and any other systems linked to the immune system) and THEN when their system sees the virus or bacteria, their system will be strong and they will have a better chance of getting over it.

How many people have you talked to where they got the vaccine and felt terrible after it or even GOT THE FLU!! Really? You can go online and find out that there are people out there that are saying they were fine before being vaccinated but then became "damaged" or injured by the vaccination and have not been the same since.

Now I am not saying that you too will be injured by the vaccination. I'm saying that it's not 100% safe (like they say it is). Because of that, you need to look at the risks and the rewards and determine if this is for you. Do your research. Pray about it. Figure out the best course of action for you.

High Fructose Corn Syrup Will Live on as Corn Sugar

HFCS (high fructose corn syrup), which has gotten a lot of bad press lately, is not going to go bye-bye. It's just changing its name. The new name is CORN SUGAR. Personally, I think it's the first "petition" by corn growers. The next step is going to be: change the name to "sugar" so people can't be biased against HFCS.

If you read the article, they keep saying how HFCS is chemically identical to sugar, honey, etc. Of course it's not. Dieticians have been feeding us this line for years saying sugar is sugar. Doesn't matter if you get it from an apple or table sugar.

Ridiculous. If you want an interesting documentary on corn, take a look at King Corn (www.imdb.com/title/tt1112115/). Corn has been genetically changed to make fat cows and to make addictive foods. I'm a big fan of controlling all processed carbs which includes table sugar, but HFCS is still a bad guy. As for honey and maple syrup and the like, they are natural products that (for the most part) don't produce a lot of the problems that HFCS and sugar do.

My clinical opinion.

Amplifyd from www.foodbusinessnews.net
The Corn Refiners Association on Sept. 14 petitioned the Food and Drug Administration to allow manufacturers the option of using “corn sugar” as an alternative name for high-fructose corn syrup.
High-fructose corn syrup has been under fire for some time because of studies claiming it was a major contributor to obesity, although other studies also have shown it was no greater a contributor than beet and cane (table) sugar or other sugars. A number of companies have removed HFCS from their products, and noted the absence of it on their labels, over the past couple of years, and more continue to do so. Use of HFCS in the United States has been declining for several years. Read more at www.foodbusinessnews.net

Prepare Yourself for Big Pharma Propaganda

You need to read this. I wish I could tell you that CNN or ABC or even FOX is going to report this study, but my guess is they won't.

The gist of this report: it took a look at 50 different randomized control trials and concluded that 99% of the time, the vaccination was INEFFECTIVE compared to placebo. Ouch!

Just keep this in mind when the media starts propagating the scare tactics to get the public to get their flu shots. Don't succumb.

Here's what you should do: Eat right (if you don't know what foods your individual body likes and doesn't like, set up a time with me or another holistic practitioner to clarify that). Make sure your immune system is strong. Don't run from germs, challenging your immune system is a natural way to "vaccinate" yourself and see how strong your immune system is. If this weren't true, doctors and nurses would constantly be coming down with infections.

Swine Flu - Are You Convinced Yet?

Last year's pandemic of swine flu prompted the government to heavily market and promote vaccinations... or else. Well, the or else turned into nothing. In the mean time, several people have new problems because of the vaccinations. Note in this article that Sweden is looking into Narcolepsy with teenagers who received the swine flu vaccination.

Here's my bottom line... if you care about preventing the flu... bolster your immune system. I use a wide variety of products, but the one I use most for my patients is Biotics Research Bioimmunozyme. Vaccinations are yearly attempts at jury-rigging, tricking the body to "think" it had already been infected. Vaccinations work well with some things, but the flu vaccination has been relatively ineffective.

Concern Over the Food Industry Adding Harmful Chemicals to My Food is Now a Mental Disease!!

The mental health professionals would probably say that I am CREATING diseased people. I tell people that there are food ingredients out there that can harm them and that should stay away from. I thought I was just being a good doctor.

What am I talking about? There is a new diagnosis that was just created called orthorexia which quite literally means "nervous about correct eating." Now I'm OK with diagnosing phobias and treating them, but doesn't this sound ridiculous? What's next? Divorcophobia - nervous about losing your spouse thru divorce. Taxaphobia - fear of the IRS. Liberalophobia - fear of liberals. Can't we just diagnose people that are prone to obsessive complusive fears as just that. Otherwise we should start labeling lazy people with mental illness... thin people who eat junk food... people that need to stop at Starbuck's every day. It's a slippery slope. Where will it end?

Deli Meat (Not Unprocessed Meats) Linked to Heart Disease and Diabetes

Not to sound arrogant, but they're getting there. I can't believe that it's taken this long for researchers to actually separate real meat from the processed and cured meats.

Now the challenge is (and I don't know the answer) whether it's actually the meat that causes diabetes or that every hot dog, sausage, salami, pastrami is eaten on WHITE BREAD or with (white flour based) PASTA. Can the researchers separate these out? Let's look at people who eat the processed meat WITH the bleached flour and compare to those who eat it without? That study will probably come down the pipe in another 30 years. Course, then the next study will look at the difference with meats from grass fed beef compared to grain/corn fed penned up cattle.

If you read the article, you will also see that they have been believing the "meat is evil" argument so long, that they backtrack and warn people against eating a steak every night. I have been saying this for years, meat is not the evil it was made out to be. High fructose corn syrup, refined white sugar, white flour, and even pasteurized milk are the culprits for most of the diseases in the US. We should be eating meat, veggies, fruit, nuts, seeds, and legumes. We eat WAY WAY WAY too many grains.

But it's going to take a while before we see that. It will mess up our pyramid and mess up our country's farming industry.

Processed Meat Linked to Heart, Diabetes Risks
A new study shows eating processed red meat -- such as hot dogs, bacon, sausage, and cold cuts -- is linked to increased risks of heart disease and diabetes.

But the study, published in Circulation, shows no such link for unprocessed red meat.

Eating unprocessed beef, pork, or lamb was not linked to a higher risk for heart disease and diabetes.

Eating one serving a day of processed meat -- or the equivalent of a single hot dog or two slices of salami -- was associated with a 42% increased risk for heart disease and a 19% increased risk for diabetes in the study, conducted by researchers from the Harvard School of Public Health.

The FDA is Corrupt

Over and over again, drug companies screw up. This case of Johnson & Johnson is just one of many examples. All that happens with these companies is a slap on the wrist... fines. The drug companies just pass those costs on to consumers and insurance companies.

Now, if this was a vitamin company or supplement or herb, the FDA would ban it. A single inquiry and it would be over. Why? The FDA and Big Pharma are linked at the hip and they work together. What is also mentioned in this article is: "Since the April 30 recall, the FDA has received hundreds of reports of complications with J&J products, including seven deaths..."

Motrin doesn't save lives, however, I guess it does kill people.

If a single person kills 7 people, he or she is serial killer. If it's a company, that's just Big Pharma doing the business of "saving lives."

Right...

Heartburn Drugs Cause Osteoporosis

Functional medicine doctors and nutritionists have been telling patients this for years. Why? We knew that the body needs stomach acid in order to properly absorb minerals and break down proteins. It's why TUMS is a very bad form of calcium, because it neutralizes stomach acid thereby reducing the likelihood of being absorbed. For this same reason, anemia is quite common because iron is one of those minerals that needs stomach acid to be absorbed.

The terrible part of this news story is that they reveal that patients should not be on an acid reducing medication for longer than three 14 day bouts per year. That amounts to 42 days of these drugs for a 365 day year (about 15%). We all know people that "HAVE" to take these medications every day. It's a dilemma.

My approach is always very simple, figure out what is causing the stomach's sensitivity to acid and then take care of that. There's that old doctor joke that says "doctor doctor it hurts when i raise my arm" and the doctor responds with "stop raising your arm." Prilosec, Nexium, Prevacid, and Aciphex all function the same way. Doctor, doctor... it hurts when I secrete stomach acid. Only to have the doctor reply, "here take this and you won't secrete stomach acid any more." Inherently, the mind goes to that place: wasn't I secreting that stomach acid for a reason?

Hmmm.
